Inspection And Repairs In Frame Construction

If there are leakages around a window frame a careful examination should be made and repairs made where they are needed. Around the lower part of the window, look particularly for holes or large cracks at the top of the window sill. There may be a crack under the inside stool or window ledge, if it is not nailed down securely; and if the stool has been cut too short, there may be cracks at either or both ends.

Also, where parting strips and pulley stiles meet the top sill there may be holes left as a result of careless fitting. Such cracks and openings may be closed satisfactorily by driving the stool down firmly and filling the spaces with white-lead putty or calking compound, much like what you would use for kitchen plumbing and bathroom fixtures such as sinks.

Sometimes driving rain or water from melting ice on the sill outside the window may be forced in under the window and stool and run down the wall. This seepage may usually be prevented by removing the lower sash and plowing a furrow or groove along the bottom of the lower rail from one side to the other with a plow plane having a one-half or three-quarter inch blade.

A cavity is thus formed that will check blowing rain before it can get inside the window. Good weather stripping carefully applied will do much to prevent air leakage and keep moisture from entering around windows and doors. This is why it is so often used for steam shower units. Steam showers are useless if the steam shower enclosure is not properly sealed.

Where the top sill joins the sub-sill, there may be a crack that will admit air and moisture unless it is calked with white-lead putty or calking compound, or covered with metal flashing. Examine the drip mold and flashing at the top of the frame to see whether they are in good condition. Put on new flashing, if necessary, preferably copper, with the upper edge bent up under the siding or shingles and the lower edge extending over the outer edge of the window cap about one-half inch and bent down to form an apron.

Before putting on the flashing it may be well to seal the cracks around the frame with white-lead putty or calking compound (a puttylike substance made for calking purposes). Sometimes the outside casing or adjoining molding may become loose and require re-nailing. In some instances the outside casing may be nailed over the siding or shingles instead of being fastened directly to the blind casing.

This method leaves triangular openings between the back of the casing and each shingle or siding board, and, if the joints under the outside covering are not properly protected, air will enter. This is a common problem found in the home sauna. New sauna owners don't immediately realize that sauna steam is escaping from small openings in the doors and windows if the sauna didn't already come with weather stripping.

In such cases the outside casing may be removed and the cracks underneath filled with white-lead putty or calking compound, or the triangular openings may be closed without removing the casing by employing one of two methods.

They may either be calked with oakum (hemp fiber from tarred hemp rope) to within one-half inch of the surface and then filled with calking compound, or covered by means of a strip of wood (about 2-inches wide and as thick as the casing) notched out to fit the irregularities in the surface and nailed to the siding or shingles adjoining the outside casing.

How to Repair Small and Medium Sized Holes in a Drywall

The beauty of modern walls such as drywalls (also known as wallboard, gypsum board, or Sheetrock) is that even if you get holes in them, fixing or patching these walls is easy. Believe me, it's no rocket science and you just need some hardware materials and a great deal of patience to pull the job off.

Whether you're repairing a small or medium sized hole, the techniques used are similar. Small and medium sized holes can be ½-inch to 6 inches in diameter. The smaller the hole, the easier it can be fixed, and the less time it takes.

For Small Holes

Small holes up to ½ inch across can be patched easily using a drywall compound. Other than cleaning the surrounding wall area, you don't need a lot of preparation to fix holes this small.

1. Use a hammer or to tap the wall around the hole to create a slight depression. Alternately, you can also use the rounded edge of the screw to tap it more accurately.

2. Fill in the hole with the drywall compound. For really small holes, a single coating is needed.

3. Once it dries off, lightly sand off the area.

For Medium Sized Holes

Repairing holes up to 6 inches in diameter will take more steps, although the process is still relatively easy. The trick here really is to get the gap covered and make the repair as "invisible" as possible.

1. Buy the needed materials from a home improvement store. For this job, you will need a peel-and-stick drywall patch, some drywall compound, utility knife, sanding paper, and a taping or putty knife. The patch that you can buy is usually made of a stiff metal backer covered with an adhesive mesh.

2. Prepare the hole area by cutting off any loose paper or loose pieces of gypsum with a utility knife.

3. Peel off the backing paper covering the adhesive, and position the patch over the hole. Use a taping knife to stick the patch firmly over the hole.

4. Apply a generous amount of drywall compound into the patch, making sure that the compound presses the patch into place.

5. Give the first coat about 24 hours to dry off, then apply another coating of the compound.

6. When the second coating has dried off as well, sand the area carefully. Using a fine-grit paper, sand the patch smooth, "feathering" out the rough edges so that the compound blends into the existing drywall.

Dry sanding can get really dusty so you may have to use vacuum cleaners that have special sanding screen attachments to clean of all the dust. Alternately, you can also opt to use wet sanding but you have to avoid rubbing off the compound too much, else you'd need to do the job all over again.

7. Lastly, you need to prime and paint the patch to keep moisture away and make the repair job even more invisible.

Drywall fixing is also an art more than simply repair -- get the task done as smoothly as possible so that you deceive the eye into thinking that no repair has been done at all. So what are you waiting for? Get on with the job and do your magic!

Check those subcontractors. A basement waterproofing contractor who subcontracts his work isn't necessarily bad, but he is adding a layer of bureaucracy to the process. If possible, find a guy who, along with his staff, do all the work himself, including the billing.

A queen size summer duvet is about 26 ounces. Moving up to the "mountain" or "winter" weights, you would expect a queen size to come in at around 54 ounces.

The casing of the duvet, call the ticking, should be lightweight. The shell should also be made of down-proof fabric.

How a duvet is stiched is very important. The down inside of a duvet needs to be able to puff up (loft). Baffles and channels are the most common type of stitching. These help to distribute the down evenly throughout the comforter. Without properly stitched baffels, all of the down will have a tendency to bunch up at the bottom of the duvet. This can be fixed by shaking the comforter to redistribute them again. But with properly baffled stitching, you shouldn't have to do this as often.

Duvets are made to be covered by a removable case, kind of like a huge pillow case. This helps to protect the duvet and keep it clean. Because you are allowed to wash comforters, you don’t need to use a cover with them. However, that doesn’t mean that you can’t use a duvet cover for your comforter.

The wonderful thing about comforter covers is that no matter how ancient or unattractive a comforter may be, dressing it up can give it a new life and a new purpose. If you live in a typical household have several old blankets, pillows, and comforters hidden away in the attic or under beds. In another words, if your not a good painter or do not have patience, then you should sub this job out. After that, the flooring and lighting; flooring is usually a tile or a hardwood. Most modern kitchens go with this look, but also a linoleum floor could work as well. Again, it is a job for a contractor so make sure you budget money for this part of the project. Finally lighting, move around your kitchen and find any dead light spots. If you’re adding lights, add one there (to any dead spot) as well.
