3 Steps of Water Damage Clean Up

When water damage affects you in your home or business, you need to keep in mind that you will be dealing with three phases of restoration and getting your life back to normal.

1. Water Removal

This will typically involve extraction to remove the standing water, and the removal of saturated materials that hold water such as; carpet pad, damaged sheetrock, and insulation. A professional repair and restoration contractor will have the proper vacuum equipment and the manpower to handle the extraction and the removal of the materials retaining water, which will get you quickly on to on to phase 2.

2. Drying

Fast drying through the use of dehumidifiers and air movers is critical for mitigating the effects of water and moisture laden air during remediation. Generating super dry air, through the use of dehumidifiers and directing that air with powerful air movers, draws the moisture out of structural materials hastening their drying. The dehumidifiers also prevent secondary damage to areas that weren't originally affected. High moisture levels in the air can cause paint to peel, building materials to warp, and mold to grow in areas that were untouched by the water. Drying the wet structural materials and removing excessive moisture from the air is extremely important for limiting the damage during clean up.

3. Repair

Once the structure has been tested by a water demage contractor to ensure that it is completely dry, you can begin repairing the damage to get things back to normal. Typically a water damage remediation company will have removed baseboards or cove base and drilled holes along the bottom of the walls to facilitate the dying of the wall cavities. Pad, and possibly carpet will have been removed. Damaged sheetrock in the ceiling that may have sagged and broken from retaining water will have to be repaired. And any items permanently damaged from water, such as; insulation, items damaged by water coming from the floor above, or wood floors that are beyond repair, will have to be replaced. Most contractors who perform water removal and drying will also offer water damage repair. If you are happy with how they handled the clean up, you may want to consider them for the water damage repair as well.

Just to recap, the three critical steps of water damage clean up are:

  • Emergency Water Removal - the sooner the better
  • Fast Drying - with dehumidifiers and air movers
  • Repairing the Damage - to get your life back to normal

Crystal Chandelier Gives Elegance and Style to Your Home

Having a crystal chandelier will give elegance look on one's house. But sometimes they can be not too god in a home if this crystal chandelier are not properly maintained.

And the illumination that this chandelier has will not be visible if it has a lot of dirt on it. This will not do its purpose instead it will do the opposite thing of what you expect in having a filthy chandelier.

For some reasons, crystal chandeliers are hard to clean and it requires a lot of effort to do the cleaning job. We all know that chandelier are hanging way up in the ceiling, this is the most reason why chandeliers accumulates a lot of dirt. If you will notice that most of the mansions have chandeliers that are installed in a super high ceiling even superman can't reach.

Other reason why chandelier is too hard to maintain is because of the fragility of the crystals. If you can only wipe it in a regular basis you should not have any problem. You should learn how to clean this because you might destroy the beauty of the crystal if you don't know how to clean crystal.

But before cleaning your chandelier you should have an alternate light source before setting up. And for your safety make sure that you turned off the chandelier to prevent accident in electrical shock. Clear everything under the chandelier for some safety reasons and prepare all material needed before you go up to the ceiling, so that you don't need to go up and down getting some cleaning tools.

In cleaning the crystal chandelier you need to cover the light bulbs using a bag before proceeding on cleaning. Position a drop cloth or a newspaper underneath the chandelier to avoid messing up on your floor. Make sure that it will not put some stain on your carpet if any; good suggestion is put to covers of cloth or newspaper beneath the chandelier.

In cleaning the crystal, you can use spray or you may prefer glass cleaner. You don't need to have a lot of effort to scrub the crystal pieces by pieces or disassemble its parts. You just need to spray the glass cleaner and wait for it to dry.

If you want to thoroughly clean the crystal, you need to remove the light bulbs. Lay down a folded cloth cover over the bottom of a dishpan filled with lukewarm water. Place it on an adequate amount of cleaning powder and swish up to form bubbles. Next is, fill up a pan with hot water for rinsing, make sure that you have a cloth at the bottom of the dishpan to avoid breakage of the crystal. Add pure drops of ammonia for additional twinkle on the crystal.

Remove the crystal drop and soak it to the bubble water that you prepared earlier. Rinse it and dry them up. Place the crystal back to the chandelier and clean the remaining part of the chandelier with bubble water. Use a cloth to wipe each part of the chandelier to dry it up.

Home Remodeling Tricks to Avoid

There comes an occasional time when you and your contractor don't see eye to eye. Either there was a lack of communication on someone's part or, who am I kidding it's always a lack of communication. But, those types of problems can get resolved even though sometimes they have to end up in court.

But, there are scam artists out there who will rob you like a thief in the night. Sometimes, there is no course of action because you don't have enough information to nail them. You think you've asked all the important questions and have everything you need. But, the scam artist who flees town after taking your money won't leave tracks behind.

Outrageous New Scam

When you need a job, you might go through references and it makes a lot of sense. But, some people like to start the bidding wars and that's where they get in trouble. Bidding wars start substandard bids, which are too good to be true.

In this economy, it's easy to want a very low bid to be feasible. But, you'll get substandard work or no work done at all. Once the bid is approved and a bidder is awarded the job, they might take the advance and run. They might do poor work or use cheap materials and take short cuts. You have to be weary when it comes to substandard bids because you never know what type of mess you are going to get. Then, you have to pay someone else double to clean up the mess.

Typical Old Scams

When disaster strikes, you have to be alert about it striking twice. Contractors who come from out of town to "help" when disasters strike might offer you a good price on your yard clean up or water damage. But, they come out of the woodwork and are only using your misfortune to their advantage. If they don't know what they are doing, you'll end up with an even bigger mess.

Make sure you check their licensing and make them get permits for any work they offer to do. That way you can let the system weed out those individuals who are trying to hustle you. They'll disappear on you quick. But, at least they won't disappear with your money.

When someone comes to your door offering to do work for you at a discounted cost, you have to ask why. They'll tell you that they just completed a job in the area and they have supplies left over. It's a scam. Never accept unsolicited work unless you know who it is.

Most legitimate contractors have their business logo and name on the side of their truck. It's a great promotion tool. This isn't the only way to mark a hustler, but an unmarked vehicle is normally a sign that should make you weary. Ask for a business card and some references. Do some checking at the BBB or the court house, where you might find some lawsuits that will get you in the loop.

High pressure sales tactics are another way to spot a scammer. In this economy, some legitimate contractors might offer some discounts or give you a great deal if you act fast. But, they will let you think about it and might give you a week or two to make a decision. A hustler wants you to make that decision right now and they use other high pressure sales tactics as well. They will make you think your house will fall apart if you don't fix the problem yesterday. Get a second opinion. That's one way to make sure you have accurate information.

Scam artists will always be around. They are like roaches. They will keep knocking on your door and coming at you for every ounce of money they can get. But, there are some sure fire ways to protect yourself. Just make sure you use them and don't hesitate to back off from an offer that sounds too good to be true. It normally is!

How To Choose The Best Air Purifier - An Air Purifier Comparison For Homes And Offices

Regardless of what time of year it may be or what part of the country you live in, pollutants in the air can affect the health of you, your loved ones, and your coworkers. With the arrival of Spring comes warmer weather, Spring cleaning, and beautiful flowers. Unfortunately, the warm weather, Spring cleaning, and beautiful flowers bring increased levels of dust, pollen, allergens, and lots of other things that wreak havoc on your sinuses and allergies. As beautiful a time of year as it may be, Spring can also be a miserable time of year for many. Fall and Winter mark the beginning of the cold and flu season, with households and offices across the nation spreading germs among their inhabitants. Airborne germs and bacteria can allow simple viruses to be spread amongst numerous people several times throughout the season, enabling the virus to mutate and grow in strength with each new host.

If you suffer from allergies or sinus problems, or work in an office full of potential sick people, one of the best ways to prevent the spread of illness and combat airborne allergens is the use of an air purifier. Human beings spend 90% of their lives indoors, and the EPA has estimated that indoor air quality can be up to 50% worse than outdoors. Air purifiers pull a number of pollutants out of the air, reducing the levels of allergens and airborne organisms that transmit disease or affect allergy and asthma sufferers while helping to promote healthy living.

With so many air purifiers on the market, it can be difficult to decide which one to invest in. Air purifiers are not cheap, though the benefits they provide make them worth every penny. However, to get the most out of an air purification system, it is important to choose one that best suits your needs and the needs of those around you.

Airfree Air Purifiers

The Airfree P1000 Air Purifier, Airfree Platinum 2000 Air Sterilizer, and the Airfree Onix 3000 are designed for rooms of 450, 550, and 650 square feet respectively. Attractive in design, the Airfree models do not require replacement of any filters, so there is never any need for maintenance. They draw air into the center of the unit, and then heat it to over 400 degrees Fahrenheit to kill any bacteria, airborne viruses, dust mites, and germs - no living organism can survive temperatures that high! The air is then cooled before it is released by the completely silent motor.

Airfree air purifiers are ideal for public places where germs and bacteria are known to prosper, such as waiting rooms and doctors offices. Especially during the cold and flu season, these air purifiers make a great addition to any business office regardless of the number of employees on hand. Because of their compact design and the method by which the air is purified, Airfree products are best used in smaller rooms and offices.

Neoair Air Purifiers

Neoair air purifiers use high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters, the only filters endorsed by the Department of Homeland Security, to remove dust, allergens, and pollutants from the air. Ideal for those who have asthma and allergy problems, the Neoair products are both versatile and convenient in their design. They have been rigorously tested by the CHN Center for Disease Control and Prevention and have been given a mold reduction certification by Applied Consumer Services.

The Neoair Cruiser Air Purifier cleans the air in the last place you think you would need it: your vehicle. Designed for RVs, trucks, vans, and cars, the Neoair Cruiser is great for ridding the air in your vehicle of airborne contaminants including cigarette smoke and exhaust fumes. In addition to the standard HEPA filter, it uses a Photo-catalyst filter, Activated Carbon Filter, and UV Light to ensure you enjoy the cleanest air possible. The Neoair Cruiser Air Purifier is powered by your vehicle’s cigarette lighter and includes a UV lamp designed to last up to 20,000 hours.

Designed for rooms up to 450 square feet, the Neoair Enviro 68108 utilizes the same air cleaning technology found in laboratories and clean rooms to keep the air in your home or office free of molds, fungi, bacteria, and other allergens. The five stage air purification system includes a fiber prescreening filter, HEPA filter, activated carbon filter, advanced OFS filter, and a negative ionic discharger. The prescreen filter ensures the other filters last much longer by catching larger particles such as pollen, human skin cells, and pet dander to keep the other filters from getting clogged. The negative ionic discharger releases negative ions which have been shown to reduce stress, enhance alertness and contribute to overall well being. The Neoair Enviro 68108 includes a wireless remote control that operates the fan speed and a 2, 4, or 8 hour timer.

The Neoair Plus Air Purifier improves upon the features and conveniences of the Neoair Enviro 68108 by adding an air pollution sensor with sensor display and a filters replacement indicator. The air pollution sensor enables the system to automatically adjust the fan speed based on the level of pollution in the room. The four stage purification system includes a SuperHEPA filter which removes twice as many allergens from the air as a standard HEPA filter. The Neoair Plus also includes a wireless remote control with adjustable fan speed and timer settings, and is designed for rooms that measure up to 600 square feet.

EZ Air Purification System

Designed for rooms up to 1,200 square feet in size, the EZ Air Purification System is ideal for larger commercial settings. The four stage purification system includes a hospital grade HEPA filter, UV lamps, and activated carbon. Indicator lights inform you when the filters need to be replaced, and replacement is easy thanks to the tool-free access panel in the back of the unit. The EZ Air Purification System features a whisper quiet fan and three attractive color options. It also includes a one year supply of carbon prefilter packs.

Austin Air HealthMate And HealthMate Jr. Air Filter

The Austin Air HealthMate and HealthMate Jr. Air Filters offer users one of two unique filtering options depending on your individual needs. Those wishing to remove allergens, dust, pollens, and dander can select the medical grade HEPA filter. It traps 99.97% of all particles that are larger than 0.3 microns and is ideal for allergy and asthma sufferers. The Carbon/Zeolite filter is designed to trap a wide variety of gases, chemicals, and allergens including formaldehyde and ammonia. It is ideal for those with chemical sensitivities. Both versions of the Austin Air Filters feature foam sealing gaskets on the top and bottom to prevent untreated air from passing through. The HealthMate Jr. is designed for rooms up to 700 square feet while the standard HealthMate can efficiently clean up to 1,500 square feet.

Consider Your Specific Needs Before Purchasing

Because a variety of air purifiers exist, it is important to consider exactly what you are looking for before purchasing one. If you do not wish to worry about having to maintain the air purifier by replacing filters and UV lamps, the Airfree models are the best choice, though they tend to be more efficient in smaller spaces. For your vehicle, such as a truck or RV, the Neoair Cruiser is the perfect choice, combining multiple levels of filtering and drawing power from your cigarette lighter.

For remote control convenience and timed operation in a home or small office setting, the Neoair Enviro and Neoair Plus are the best choices with their five stage filtration technology and healthy release of negative ions. For larger, commercial settings the EZ Air Purification System and Austin Air HealthMate Systems are the best choice, especially with the Austin’s ability to reduce the presence of chemical smells.

The Big Dirty (Clean, That Is)

As a result of reading the 'Addicted to Clean: The Dirt on Green Cleaners' article, I have been doing so much research in the past few days regarding the making of your own cleaning products that I'm going buggy in a lemon juice-baking soda-white vinegar frenzy! To channel Kermie - "It's not easy (getting started) being green!"

There is a wealth of information available online regarding making your own cleaning products. Just try Googling 'make your own cleaners' or 'homemade cleaners' or anything else in that vein, and you'll receive hundreds of results leading you to recipes for furniture polish involving olive oil and lemon juice, silver polish made of baking soda, and many, many more.

I've tried to narrow down the results in order to provide you with the best, most effective homemade cleaners possible:

White Vinegar - extremely versatile. The strong odor dissipates when dry. Because it's acidic, vinegar can break down grime, and will kill bacteria and mold. Never use on marble or other porous surfaces but it's safe everywhere else. Completely non toxic.

1. In the laundry- add 1/2 to 1 cup to the rinse cycle in place of liquid fabric softener to cut down on lint and break down detergent, thus softening fabrics. If you have one of those fabric softener balls, use vinegar in that rather than fabric softener.

2. In the kitchen- mix up a batch of equal parts water and vinegar to use on surfaces.- substitute 1/2 cup vinegar in the dishwasher instead of using harsh dishwasher detergent.

3. In the bathroom- pour 2-3 cups of vinegar into toilet bowl to get rid of rings.- use same amount in the tank of the toilet approximately once per week to keep it fresh.

4. Miscellaneous- rather than using commercial air fresheners, set out a bowl of vinegar to absorb and remove odors or simmer 1 tablespoon vinegar in 1 cup water on the stove.- fill a (recycled!) spray bottle with equal parts vinegar and water to clean glass with. Add 2 tablespoons cornstarch for really tough grime.-fill a (recycled!!) mini spray bottle with straight up vinegar and spritz directly onto skin as an insect repellent.- adding white vinegar to a wash load of clothing that has urine on it will take out the smell.

Lemon - just like vinegar, lemons are acidic and will cut right through grease and dirt and grime. And who doesn't like the smell of lemons?? Again, completely non toxic and 100% natural.

1. In the living room- use a mix of 1 part lemon juice to 2 parts olive oil and a soft cleaning cloth to polish wood furniture.- lemon peels scattered in your potted plants will keep Frisky the cat at bay.

2. In the kitchen- rub down your wooden chopping block with a slice of lemon to disinfect.- toss your used lemon slices or peels down the garborator to get rid of any funky odors.

Baking Soda - it's a great scourer when mixed with a bit of liquid, and it absorbs odor.

1. In the kitchen- keep an open box in the refrigerator to get rid of odors.- make a bit of a thick paste with water to scrub away stains on your counters.- mix a few tablespoons into a mug of water and microwave until water is boiling. This loosens all the crud in the microwave and makes for easy cleaning.- if you've burned food to a pot, sprinkle it with baking soda and just moisten with water. Let sit a few hours and the food will be easily removed.- make a paste of 3 parts baking soda to 1 part water to polish silverware.- sprinkle a bit of baking soda on a sponge and use to clean your fruits and veggies before eating.

2. In the bathroom- rub baking soda onto grout with a damp sponge to get rid of dinginess and mildew.- use instead of your usual scouring powder to scrub out the tub and shower.

3. In the laundry- make a paste of baking soda and water to scrub out tough stains on fabrics prior to washing.- substitute half of the bleach you'd normally use in the whites load with baking soda. - add 1/2 a cup of baking soda to every washload to freshen, deodorize and brighten garments.

4. Miscellaneous- pour 1/2 cup baking soda then 1/2 cup white vinegar down your drain. Let sit for a few minutes and then flush with hot water. Need a more heavy duty drain cleaner? Pour 1 cup baking soda, then 1 cup salt, then 3/4 cup vinegar down the drain. Let sit at least half an hour and flush with hot water.

Rubbing Alcohol - who doesn't have a bottle of this somewhere in the house? Isopropyl very well may be the only thing you need to clean your glass and mirrored surfaces. It's also a great disinfectant. Readily available, and cheap! Do spot tests though, and keep away from flame (duh, alcohol??).

1. Anywhere with glass or mirrors- mix up a batch of the aforementioned vinegar-water solution and add 1 part rubbing alcohol for added sparkle.

2. Anywhere you need disinfecting- use rubbing alcohol to disinfect shopping cart handles, light switches, door handles, the steering wheel, the telephone...anywhere you'd find germy hands.

So there you go! I could really have gone on and on and on a lot longer, with many more different formulas for homemade household cleaners, but when I looked over all the information I had gleaned, I realized that the above listed were probably the best, and simplest methods.

It's going to be tough for me to make the switch from my trusty bottles of PineSol and Windex to using a homemade solution in a dollar store spray bottle but I honestly believe that once I get used to it, it won't seem so tough. Not to mention the money I'll be saving!! A $.50 box of store brand baking soda that will clean my shower and tub numerous times compared to a $4 container of Comet? If I'm truly going the frugalite way, it's more than obvious what the choice should be.

Some of these items I will be able to find for ridiculously cheap at the dollar store, and some will be purchased for ridiculously cheap at the grocery store. I usually clean my house on Saturdays, so this Saturday I am going to box up my usual army of cleaners including the laundry detergent, and I will be cleaning au naturel. Not naked you silly monkey, but with the natural products I will be using. Then I will give you an honest opinion on how it went so you too can start cleaning without being dirty.

Bistro Chairs: Five Tips to Buying the Best

If there is one thing you can say about what makes going to a bistro style bar, club or restaurant is that it oozes atmosphere. And that is one of the big reasons that bistros have become so popular in the last few years. The combination of great service, exotic and well prepared dishes and a European atmosphere that takes people to another world makes customers flock to bistros from Kansas City to Cancun.

So when you are starting to lay out your plans to create that perfect bistro environment for your new night spot, interior decorating and design get a high ranking of priority in your purchase decisions. Perhaps one of the most important elements of that interior decorating design layout are the bistro chairs (http://www.laytrad.co.uk/commercial-bistro-chairs.htm) you pick. For any place that you are designing for people to relax, recreate, dine and drink in, the importance of the chairs cannot be overstated. Not only must the chairs you provide to your customers be efficient, easy to move around and comfortable, they must be highly durable, easy to clean and contribute to the bistro feel of your bar or restaurant just right. So putting together a checklist of the five most important tips to look for in the design of your bistro chairs is a great start.

Top 5 list of great design concepts for your bistro chair - #5 - Only the best.

Your customers don't care who made the chairs you provide to them to use in your bistro bar or restaurant. But if the chair is shoddily made, they will notice those imperfections pretty fast. And even if the poor production standards only show up in leg footings coming loose or loose threads in the fabric, if that chair ages too quickly and begins to look cheap and beat up, that reflects badly on you.

A bistro does project a feel of being exotic, old world and European but there is a big difference between running a cosmopolitan bistro and running a dump. This is not to say that just because you go with a low priced bistro chair manufacturer that you are running a dump. In every other respect your bar or restaurant could be all about quality and top notch service and good food and drink for your customers. But if the customers feel that you cut corners with the decor and the furniture, that will communicate low quality to them which will effect their attitude about the food and drink they buy in your place.

It pays to buy your bistro chairs from well regarded chair manufacturers that have a reputation for building sturdy, well made and well designed chairs. Not only will this send a message to your customers that you have put their comfort and safety at the top priority for your lounge, it also means that your investment in bistro chairs will last much longer. And if your chairs last twice as long after you pay 20% to buy only the best, that is still a solid investment in your future and the future of your bistro as well.

Top 5 list of great design concepts for your bistro chair = #4 Versatility

Maybe even more than in a bar or restaurant environment, a bistro is a very busy place. Customers commonly feel free to rearrange the furniture, the chairs or the entire room if they can to fit their desires for a wonderful evening of dining and social interaction. On any given night you might have one table hosting just one peaceful customer enjoying beverages and reading his way through Moby Dick and the next night that table might be host to a dozen happy customers talking loudly and enjoying every minute of their time in your bistro.

Just as your staff must be prepared to adjust and serve what the customers want for their dining atmosphere, so must the bistro chairs you provide for your customer's enjoyment. The perfect bistro chair must not be designed for a single function. They must be easy to move around to add chairs to a table or to pull chairs off for a smaller group to gather and visit intimately away from others. The chairs must be easy to pick up and move around and able to function as well indoors or out so customers can carry them into the lawn area to watch the stars at night or enjoy some music and then back inside when the mood moves them to do so. And that mobility is all built into the design of the bistro chair in the first place.

Top 5 list of great design concepts for your bistro chair - #3 The DNA of a chair.

Unless your customer is a chair maker, they will never get down and inspect what the chair is made of. But the materials and constructions standards of each of those chairs you invest in for your bistro is a high priority for you. The top priority is durability. How well a chair will hold up over time is all in the quality of construction standards from the materials through the design and construction of the chair.

But a secondary but important issue about your bistro chair is maintenance. Are they easy to clean up and resistant to damage and staining? These considerations may impact whether you go with a wood chair or some other material that serves the customers well but makes life easier for you as well.

Top 5 list of great design concepts for your bistro chair = #2 Elegance

the term "relaxed elegance" may be the best description of why spending an evening in a bistro setting is so popular with customers. While in your bistro, customers want to feel they can be completely at ease and relaxed. But at the same time the atmosphere of your bar or restaurant should exude a classy elegance and a quite cosmopolitan sophistication that makes the customer feel they stepped out of their normal life into a French or Italian villa for a while. The design of your bistro chairs can give your customers that feeling.

Top 5 list of great design concepts for your bistro chair = #1 Its all about Bistro.

Perhaps the most important of our five criteria for the perfect bistro chair is that it fits perfectly with the bistro environment you are crating with interior decorating, with the tables, the lighting and every other aspect of the physical space your customers will enjoy. Achieving that coordinated look puts the the finishing touches on a perfect bistro environment. And when every aspect of your night spot creates that bistro feel from the chairs on up, you have the elements of a bar or restaurant that will become a favorite place to be for sophisticated customers who want to come to your lounge and stay for hours enjoying the atmosphere and hospitality of your bistro. And that will spell big success for your new bistro night spot and a long and prosperous future as well.

How to Make an Outdoor Fire Pit

A fire pit can add dimension and value to your home. Fire pits are very nice in the winter as well as the summer.

There are kits available that allow you to simply put one together and away you go. However, I find that learning how to make an outdoor fire pit is the most cost effective way to go.

The first thing you want to do is consider what you want the fire pit to look like. Think about color, height, width, location and material needed.

You want to be away from any structures or things that could catch fire for obvious reasons, so location is the first thing to decide on. For material, most rock or do-it-yourself cement should suffice.

As these things go, always check with your local authorities for ordinances and regulations regarding fire pits in your area concerning where they can be placed and how big they can be. You want to be within the law with this. If you need building permits or neighbor's permission, get it so you are in line and legal so you don't run into problems later on.

With that out of the way, you can map out your location and begin. Here is an idea for a basic, in-ground fire pit that is approximately 24" inside diameter and 10" deep.

What You Need

You will need 2 or 3 bags of quick drying cement like Sakrete or the like, enough firebrick or stone to line it with, some quick mortar, a trowel, a 2x4 piece of lumber, a small piece of dowel wood, a can of spray paint (any color will do), some regular gravel and some string.

1) First, find the center of your fire pit's location and mark it with the dowel wood. Now attach a 12" piece of string to the dowel with a can of spray paint at the end. Using the string as a guide, paint a 24" circle. Then do the same thing with a piece of string 24" long.

2) Dig out between the paint lines 10" deep and you have a trench that is 48" in diameter at the largest point with a trench that measures 12" wide by 10" deep all around. This is your base.

3) Now add the gravel to the trench and tamp it down so it's firm. Then mix your cement and fill the trench to the top all the way around. Level this off with the 2x4 and smooth out with the trowel. Allow to set for at least two days, possibly up to a week so it has cured properly.

4) You will dig out the inside of the pit to so it is 2 to 3" higher than the sides, which will 7 or 8" and lay some more gravel in the bottom.

5) Then mix up your mortar and lay the firebrick so the bottom is completely covered. You may want to lay a second layer of brick. That's up to you entirely.

6) Allow the mortar to dry for a couple of days and you have an in-ground fire pit ready to go.

This is only one style among many, so look around and see what you want and go for it!

Your Home Or Vacation Cottage - Don't Give Fires a Place to Start in Your Kitchen Or Utility Room

Don't give fires a place to start in your home or cottage. Make it a point to do a thorough inspection and review of your home much as if the yearly fire inspectors were at your abode.

Where to start? First things first start in your kitchen, kitchen areas as well as your utility room cleaning spaces. . If you do need to extend or alter existing wiring calls a trained and certified electrician not just someone you are told knows how to do it. If you do any matches or cleaning solvents ensure that they are packed away carefully and securely. In terms of matches - keep matches securely away from little hands who may just want to have fun with those matches or perhaps a lighter. Your home could go up in smoke over some little fun/

Next check your laundry utility room areas. Again check for solvents and other cleaning fluids. Guard against spontaneous ignition fires by keeping those oily rags or clothes that may be saturated with furniture polish, paints or wax in closed metal containers and preferably not on top of that stored next in hot closed closets or cupboards. In addition keep waxers and floor mops in cool open spots. The porch areas of your cottage or house might be good areas to store these cleaning utensils.

If you do ironing chores in these two area - your kitchen or utility room make it a point as well as a habit not to leave your electric iron with , that is with the current on and hot - even if its just for a rest and resting period and periods or for a brief spell. Use an automatic cut off type clothes pressing iron. In addition let the iron cool thoroughly on the protected cover of your ironing board. Then store the iron away in a safe and secure place.

Kitchens are an area that should be made fire proof. First and foremost ensure that you have a charged and even inspected fire extinguisher. Fire extinguishers run down over time - they must be inspected and recharged if needed or necessary. It never hurts to play it safe.

Before you leave your home it is always a good idea to check your stove. Do not let grease accumulate on the stove. In addition make it a solid practice to keep grease containers away from your stove or stoves. If grease fires unfortunately do occur and flare up, the correct and approved procedure to extinguish such a fire is to smother the grease fire in pans by using tight lids for covers. In addition kitchen salt itself can be thrown onto grease fires to extinguish them.

Along the lines of prevention and preventative maintenance see to it that window curtains and hanging towels cannot blow into gas flames or over a hot stove. In addition check your automatic gas heater regularly and on an ongoing manner. If a house is to be left unoccupied and vacant - then turn off non-automatic types before leaving that home or vacation cottage unoccupied.

Lastly in terms of daily and regular cleaning and clean up of your home do not throw flour , uncooked cereals or dust from a vacuum cleaner or dustpan into a lit stove or incinerator. Dust can well be explosive. Wrap up dust and dispose of it safely.

When it comes to fire prevention in your home two main areas to inspect are your kitchen and utility room cleaning areas. Inspect these two areas well and take preventative measures. Do not give fires a place to start.

Interior Decorating Tips- Redo Your Bedroom Quick, Easy, Cheap

Comforters & duvets are versatile and functional ways to decorate your bed with a sense of fashion. With the variety of fabrics available for these bedding covers, and the ease in which you can change them, sets of duvet and comforter covers are one of the quickest, most fabulous, and most low-priced ways to change the look of your bedroom.

What's the difference between a comforter and a duvet?

Comforter – A quilted and filled blanket that you are able to wash. Synthetic fibers are commonly used for filling. There are an endless number of different colors and textures that they are made from.

Duvet – A dry-clean only quilted and filled blanket. Typically stuffed with down feathers. They are generally unembellished and come in white or off-white.

When shopping for a Duvet, examine the amount of fill. FILL is the cubic inches per ounce of down. Warmer duvets have a higher fill number. Also higher numbers tend to be better quality in general.

Most fill numbers are in the 500-550 range. Higher quality is between 600-700. And very high (and very expensive) fill numbers are over 700.

Down comforters are also identified by the region and time of year they were manufactured for. "summer" or "southern" weight duvets are the lightest type. A queen size summer duvet is about 26 ounces. Moving up to the "mountain" or "winter" weights, you would expect a queen size to come in at around 54 ounces.

The casing of the duvet, call the ticking, should be lightweight. The shell should also be made of down-proof fabric.

How a duvet is stiched is very important. The down inside of a duvet needs to be able to puff up (loft). Baffles and channels are the most common type of stitching. These help to distribute the down evenly throughout the comforter. Without properly stitched baffels, all of the down will have a tendency to bunch up at the bottom of the duvet. This can be fixed by shaking the comforter to redistribute them again. But with properly baffled stitching, you shouldn't have to do this as often.

Duvets are made to be covered by a removable case, kind of like a huge pillow case. This helps to protect the duvet and keep it clean. Because you are allowed to wash comforters, you don’t need to use a cover with them. However, that doesn’t mean that you can’t use a duvet cover for your comforter.

The wonderful thing about comforter covers is that no matter how ancient or unattractive a comforter may be, dressing it up can give it a new life and a new purpose. If you live in a typical household have several old blankets, pillows, and comforters hidden away in the attic or under beds. Bring them out of the closet and make them useful again by throwing a comforter cover on and let them give your bedroom a makeover.

Comforter coverings are a easyway to change the mood of your bedroom without having to repaint or refurnish. Your bed is typically the main focus of your bedroom because it takes up such a large portion of the room. Because of its relatively large scale, it automatically draws the eye to it. No matter what else you have as far as decorating elements, your bed, or more specifically your comforter, is what will specify the style of your room.

Benefits of the Reverse Osmosis Water Filter

Reverse osmosis water filters function by passing water through a membrane-type filter that leaves impurities on the other side. Clean water is deposited in a reservoir, to be pumped up to a separate drinking water faucet, and the contaminants on the other side are flushed out of the system later. This type of water filter is among the best ways to clean your water, and it will remove most contaminants: most bacteria and viruses, pesticides and other VOCs, hydrogen sulfide, nitrates, sediments, arsenic, chlorine, fluoride, heavy metals like lead and mercury, iron, and even bad tastes.

The reverse osmosis water filter is also referred to as a hyperfiltration system. That's because it is so very effective at removing contaminants from your water supply. It works by moving your water through a series of reservoirs, in which the clean water moves to the clean side of the filter, leaving behind the contaminants. The filter does not work through pressure; instead, water must move passively. This means that the filtration process is slower than you might find in other water filtration systems. A reverse osmosis water filtration system will require a large tank to be installed under your counter which will provide a drinking water reservoir. In most systems, you can expect to produce around fifteen gallons a day of bottled-quality water. If you're a bottled water fan, this will save you much more than the reverse osmosis filter will cost you.

There are two types of membranes typical to reverse osmosis water filters. A thin film composite (TFC) membrane is very good at removing contaminants, but it is also very susceptible to damage from chlorinated water supplies. An activated carbon pre-filtration system may need to be installed upstream of your TFC membrane to remove chlorine before it gets to the membrane. The other type of membrane is the cellulose triacetate (CTA) filter, which is also good at removing contaminants though inferior to the TFC, but does not have a problem processing chlorine. Make sure before installing your water filtration system that you have the membrane most appropriate to your water system; a damaged membrane can force you to replace your entire filtration system.

Some water systems have biological contaminants like bacteria or even amoebas and other single-celled organisms. If this sounds like you, you may need an ultraviolet filter as well as a reverse-osmosis filter. The one thing that reverse osmosis water filters are not great at removing is the biological contaminants; they get most of it, but it only takes one getting through to contaminate your whole reservoir. The UV filter will kill all living things in your water, even if they get through, solving your problem. So you may need a three-filter system for the best water: an activated carbon to remove the chlorine and most contaminants, a reverse osmosis filter to remove most other contaminants, and finally a UV filter to destroy any living organisms that still made it through. In return, you'll get the cleanest possible water supply for your family.

The only other thing you may need to be concerned about with a reverse osmosis water filtration system is the amount of water it takes to create those fifteen gallons a day - up to ten gallons for each gallon of clean water created. If you live in an area where water needs to be conserved, you may need to ensure that rejected water goes into your gray water reservoir, where it can be used to feed your flowers.

Professional Quality Concrete Landscape Edging - 5 Telltale Signs

As with any contractors, not all concrete landscape edging companies are alike. Since you can't "try before you buy", here are 5 telltale signs to guide your search for the right contractor.

1. Determine if the company is a "concrete contractor."

In the concrete landscape edging business, being a "concrete contractor" is a key indicator of the company's professional standing. This tells you the company holds the highest industry licensing and that they are insured.

Concrete contractors provide professionals for your concrete landscape edging that are covered under the company's own insurance. Less professional services do not provide this assurance, leaving your home owner's policy to cover any injured workers who are either not or improperly insured.

On the contrary, a concrete contractor takes full responsibility for their staff, alleviating that burden from you.

2. Initial and follow-up responsiveness.

If it takes a company more than a day to respond to your first phone call, there's a good chance things will go downhill from there. This is a general customer service principle, not just in the concrete landscape edging business.

Most often, the longer it takes a company to get back to you the first time, the longer -and longer - it will take them to get back to you with subsequent calls and requests. Responsiveness isn't just an important indicator of customer service, it tells you how serious the concrete landscape edging provider is about their business.

3. They do what they say they're going to do.

If the lights went out in your house, you'd called an electrician, hoping he'd be right over. If he showed up three weeks later -in the middle of dinner - would you still want to work with him?

The same idea follows in concrete landscape edging contractors. If you set up an initial survey of what you'd like to do, and they show up late--beware. Look for a service that not only shows up when they say they will, but shows up a few minutes early.

Chances are good your concrete landscape edging project will run smoothly and on time from there.

4. They don't use subcontractors.

Concrete landscape edging is a skill acquired in both specific training and practice. It is difficult to be sure that a subcontractor has the requisite expertise. Therefore, a concrete landscape edging service that uses only their own on-staff, factory-trained technicians provides a higher and more consistent level of quality.

5. Appearance

Without sounding too starched, it should be said that appearance does make a big difference. Compare the concrete landscape edging workers who show up with shirts untucked and unbuttoned with those who wear a neat and clean company version.

A company shirt is an outward mark of a professional attitude and work ethic. The person working for the company is more clear about the principles and values through which the company operates. For that matter, a company that puts some thought into appearance also makes a statement about how seriously they view their business.

Appearance may not be everything, but it definitely counts for a lot.

A strong beginning most often leads to a beautiful end. Look for photo samples of prior work. If you like what you see, use these five telltale signs to find a concrete landscape edging service worth their weight. Find a company that excels on all five, and you've found a winner.

A Guide to Deep Cleaning Your Carpets

Just about every household in America has a vacuum in the closet that someone in the house uses for everyday carpet cleaning and vacuuming which is necessary to remove loose sand, pet hair, and regular messes that end up on the floor. In order to keep your expensive carpet looking at its best, only vacuuming is not enough. Carpets need thorough deep cleaning on a regular basis. A good deep cleaning method will allow you to get the most life out of your big flooring investment. The more spills, dirt, and other “stuff” that stays on the carpet, the more the carpet wears out, and not everything is removed with a regular Singer or Dirt Devil.

Once a year or year and a half, you should refresh your carpet and extend its life by deep cleaning it. The difference between a carpet that has been only vacuumed and one that has had a deep cleaning is amazing; the carpet will look so clean and smell so fresh; deep cleaning is almost like a miracle for your tired, dirty, stained carpeting.

There are several ways a carpet can be deep cleaned. You can do it yourself, if you want to give that a try, but special equipment is required and the work is difficult and time consuming. You would also need to purchase special carpet shampoo for whatever material your carpet is made of and follow the guidelines your carpet manufacturer recommends for deep cleaning your specific type of carpeting.

Although it is possible to deep clean your carpets yourself, it is probably worth the small investment necessary to have a professional who specializes in deep carpet cleaning come to your home and do it for you. A reputable company can take the worry out of the process and do a difficult job for you, and most deep cleanings are an affordable way to get the most life out of your carpet. A professional cleaning costs much less than having to buy new carpet after all.

When a professional comes to assess your carpet cleaning needs, he will be able to tell what fibers your carpet is comprised of and determine the best way to clean your rug. There are five ways to choose from: 1) absorbent pad; 2) rotary shampooing; 3) steam cleaning (extracting stains and dirt with hot water); 4) dry foam; or 5) dry extraction.

Steam cleaning is probably the most common method of deep cleaning, and either you as the homeowner or a professional can do it. The hassle of buying or renting a steam cleaner, however, makes it much more convenient to hire someone. They will bring all the necessary supplies with them, and usually carpet-cleaning companies will have two people working at once, so the job will be finished quickly. Hot water extraction, or what we commonly call steam cleaning, requires pre cleaning treatment of the carpet with a dirt-loosening solvent. Then, the steam machine injects hot water into the carpet and dirt and stains disappear up the strong suction device that picks up both the water and the nasty stuff that is making your carpet ugly and draining it of its life.

Using the absorbent pad method for deep carpet cleaning is also quite effective, as are all the methods of deep cleaning, but this is one method the homeowner really can’t be expected to do. With this type of cleaning, a special machine has absorbent pads attached to spinners that absorb the stains and soil right out of your carpet.

Strong, durable carpets can be cleaned using the dry extraction method. With this type of carpet cleaning, specially made solvents or cleaners are instilled way down into the carpet fibers then, the cleaning agent draws all the dirt and other pollutants to it. Finally, the cleaning solution, stains and soil are removed with suction (vacuum).

Using the dry foam extraction method of deep cleaning is sometimes recommended for natural fiber carpeting such as woolen carpet. Similar to the other ways carpet can be cleaned, the professional carpet-cleaning employee applies a cleaning agent that becomes foam. The foam works to attract and loosen trod-in stains and dirt, and once enough time has passed for all the grime to be loosened, the foam and dirt are vacuumed away.

Rotary shampooing is just what its name implies. A special carpet shampoo is applied to the carpet and with the help of a special machine with powerful spinning brushes, the carpet is cleaned by the combination of the shampoo and the power of the rotating heads on the deep cleaning machine.

A professional can help you decide which the best option for your carpet is, and how often a deep cleaning should be done based on your lifestyle; obviously, if you have pets and or young children, your carpet would benefit by more frequent deep cleaning in addition to your regular weekly vacuuming. The best way to deep clean the carpet can be determined by the material out of which your carpet is made and the recommendations of the carpet manufacturer. Regardless of the method, regularly deep cleaning your carpets is important and will help your carpet last longer and look better.

Furniture Care Tips: Make Furniture Last Long

Whether you are buying a new barcalounger or a large metal wall art, buying new furniture can be a fun and exciting adventure. But cleaning and caring for them can be a different story altogether, as many furniture owners think of this activity as a tedious chore. However, we cannot undermine the importance of proper caring for the furniture because this makes these pieces last a long time with us.

There is a wide array of furniture of different materials to choose from. Each material requires a different kind of cleaning method. To help you care for your furniture properly, here are some wonderful tips to keep in mind.

Wood

Wood furniture such as wooden chairs and wooden wall décor must be dusted regularly, several times a week to maintain a surface free of debris and to help avoid soil build up. Dust the furniture using a clean, dry and lint-free cloth. For general cleaning, wash the furniture surface with mild soap and water. Rinse with water and dry with a clean cloth thoroughly afterwards.

Make sure that you protect all your wooden furniture against direct sunlight. This means that you have to place your wooden chairs and tables away from the windows but if you do, ensure that the windows are properly covered with drapes or curtains to minimize sunlight. The sun’s strong rays can dry and fade the color. It is also a bad idea to place wooden furniture near air vents because forced air can deteriorate the quality of the material.

Aluminum, metal or steel

Proper maintenance of modern furniture made of aluminum, metal or steel like a large metal wall art can be done through regular dusting and occasional wiping with soft, damp cloth. For tougher dirt, wash with hot and soapy water. Rinse and then dry with a soft cloth afterwards.

Never use any abrasive, strong detergent or cleansing powders to clean this kind of furniture because some of these may contain alkali, which can cause the pitting of this material. Rinse and dry afterwards.

Leather

Read the manufacturer’s instructions for care for leather furniture. There are specific leather conditioners that should be used for cleaning and keeping the shine of the material. If there are no available instructions, clean dirty leather by wiping a damp cloth and then with a dry cloth.

Marble

Wash marble furniture with clean cloth and lukewarm water. Once every six months, you can wash it with a mild detergent to remove soil buildup. It is not necessary to wax marble especially white ones because wax can cause for a yellowish tone to develop.

Reed, cane and wicker

For pieces of furniture made of these materials, you can clean them using a vacuum with a brush attach. You also have the option of washing them with mild soap and lukewarm water. Just make sure that you do not wet the wooden parts of the furniture. Use a dry cloth to dry the surface and to absorb any excess moisture.

Caring for your furniture and making it last a long time are not that difficult if you have the knowledge and patience on how to do these things.

Things to Remember While Setting Up an Indoor Garden at Your Home

If you are a garden or plants lover and don’t have enough space in your backyard or front yard to set up a garden then you should opt for indoor plants. Indoor plants are also very beneficial in keeping your environment pleasant and friendly for living. Indoor plants will change your home into nature’s paradise. Indoor plants are a great boon for homes with larger spaces as they could be used for filling up the space.

If one has some taste of gardening then setting up an indoor flower will not be a great problem. And if done with interest then indoor gardening will bring a lot of pleasure to see how much can be accomplished by so little effort. One should refer an indoor plants specialist for selecting the right plants for their indoor garden

Though there are various factors to look after while considering setting up an indoor garden at your home.

The main factor to consider when choosing indoor plants is whether they will be compatible with the environment of low intensity of light, no surplus air or water etc. This is a very important factor in choosing the plants that one would want to grow in an indoor garden. You should be very careful in classifying the plants that could survive in full shading and the ones that requires partial shading to survive so you can position your plants accordingly. The plants that need at least partial shade to survive should be well taken care of and be placed near windows, patios or spaces which get some at least for part of the day.

The next thing that you should take care of is about watering your indoor plants. When regularly watering your plants you should be very careful about the amount that you use. You should take care that the plants should not be over watered or there should be a facility for draining out the excess water. To avoid this kind of problems one should select an indoor plant that can tolerate poor drainage, or grow in water or just select air plants that do not have to be watered. What ever the decision, provide for some kind of drainage.

The one thing you should keep in mind is about the space you use for your indoor plants. The indoor plants should be selected in such a way that its growth characteristics should be according to the limited space your home. A plant that grows a big canopy may not be suitable to indoor flower gardens. Many people tend to choose creepers and climbers as they use space well when trellised.

It is easy to grow indoor flower gardens if you learn the basic well and gardening is one of the best hobbies of all tomes. If you are planning to buy some indoor plants then you should consider all these factors in mind and should purchase from an expert who could guide you in selecting a suitable plant.

For persons residing in Brisbane and looking forward to set up an indoor garden should contact a Brisbane indoor plant specialist for any form of guidance in selecting plants and considering other important factors.

The Joys of Making Your Own Dollhouse Furniture

Dollhouses have had universal appeal for thousands of years, not only for children but for adults as well. Their allure comes from the endless possibilities of living life vicariously in miniature, the enjoyment of which would be limited only by the person's imagination.

Today, there are a host of video and computer games which are based on the age-old principle of the dollhouse: furniture, walls and people. While they may be more visually appealing with their virtual working parts - ranges where food can actually be cooked, plumbing through which water really flows, and people who could interact with each other - it is not quite the same as having a physical model to play with.

It would be easy enough to just go to a store and buy a dollhouse and all the necessary accessories. It is true that store-bought items these days are generally of decent workmanship. We have gotten used to the idea that the more you spend, the better the quality is. But these days, the word recession would bring a ready cringe to any working person's face. Money certainly becomes more valuable the less there is to go around. But while our wallets might suffer from being too light, our enjoyment need not. If one good thing could come from the current financial stagnation, it would be that it would allow a person to express creativity in simpler but effective ways.

To make your own dollhouse, you need not look further than your own home. Take out your scissors, stapler, needle, thread, and glue, and get ready to go to work. Well, play-work.

For the dollhouse furniture, look for unused shoeboxes and shape them into frames for beds and couches. Glue on some batting from an old pillow, and cover them all up with cloth scraps. For dining tables, use the cardboard center of toilet paper as legs, and attach it to a rectangular piece of cardboard.

For a table or floor lamp, use an old candle holder as the base and stick an inverted plastic cup over it. Stick together matchboxes and empty slide-out crayon boxes for chests of drawers, and glue on toothpaste lids for handles. Cover up surfaces with colorful construction paper, tin foil and glitter accordingly.

For the dollhouse itself, use old plywood, or cut up a few packing boxes into floors and walls and glue them together. This way, you would have the freedom of making up your own rooms lay-out as well. You could paint the walls with acrylic, or cover them up with leftover gift-wrapping paper. For the floors, use old (but clean) mats. Paper doilies could brighten up the floors as "rugs" with their intricate patterns. If you want to "hang" artwork onto your walls, cut out tiny landscapes and pictures from old magazines. Use bits of lace for curtains over cellophane windows.

These are just a few useful ideas. Make it a family affair; you will discover that foregoing one Saturday movie-evening to make dollhouse furniture will not be such a great sacrifice, and the pay-off will be a fun, creative time with your kids. You would also have the great satisfaction of making something nice without needing to spend a lot, if at all.
